These ponderosa 'peeler trees' are said to be a product of native Americans
pealing sections of bark and cambium off the trees. Apparently the cambium
has a high protein content but the Forest Service staff are not positive
what
the uses were. They're located in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.
The trees were recently discovered when Forest Service staff cruised the
stands for a project. This is a rare population of Ponderosa. Other than in the
Uintas, this is the northernmost Utah native ponderosa growth. The Forest
Service intends to protect these trees.
